Discovering Hidden Gems: Guangdong's Off-The-Beaten-Path Adventure

When one thinks of Guangdong, images of sprawling metropolises like Guangzhou and Shenzhen often spring to mind. These urban hubs pulsate with modern energy, from towering skyscrapers to neon-lit streets. But teaching in Guangdong is an open invitation to delve deeper into a province replete with natural wonders and cultural relics, many of which lie quietly, awaiting discovery.

Begin your journey with the majestic Danxia Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the northern part of the province. Unlike any landscape you’ve ever seen, Danxia boasts a myriad of red sandstone formations, sculpted over millennia by erosion. As you hike the well-marked trails, you’ll encounter an ever-changing tableau of pinnacles, ravines, and gorges, all bathed in a warm, reddish hue. The sunrise and sunset vistas here are particularly breathtaking, casting the rocks in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and deep crimson.

While Danxia offers a dance of colors and natural forms, the ancient town of Chikan beckons with its rich Cantonese culture. Situated along the banks of the Tan River, Chikan appears to be frozen in time. As you wander its narrow lanes, you’ll find exquisite examples of Qilou architecture—a distinctive style featuring arcades and terraces. These structures, many of which date back to the Qing Dynasty, bear witness to the town’s prosperous past as a trading hub. Local teahouses and markets offer a chance to mingle with residents, and perhaps pick up a trinket or two as a memento.

If your artistic senses are tingling, make your way to Foshan, lovingly dubbed the city of ceramics. Foshan’s history with pottery goes back over 5,000 years, and today, it remains a beacon for artists and aficionados alike. The Shiwan Art Ceramics Market is a treasure trove, with countless stalls showcasing handcrafted pieces, from ornate vases to intricate figurines. While here, don’t miss out on the ceramic-making workshops, where you can try your hand at molding your masterpiece.

Of course, these adventures wouldn’t be complete without the stories and companionships forged along the way. Many of our teachers, both past and present, have ventured into these nooks and crannies of Guangdong, collecting memories that last a lifetime. They speak fondly of the unexpected friendships formed with locals, the awe-inspiring moments of discovering a hidden waterfall, and the joy of tasting a local delicacy for the first time.
